In the past when a patient had extremely worn, cracked, or decayed teeth—regular fillings just weren’t strong enough to fix them and dentists were forced to use dental crowns to correct these problems. Because the back teeth support the majority of the biting forces, and large fillings usually aren’t strong enough to last in these areas, crowns used to be the only available choice. It was frustrating to have to remove so much healthy tooth structure in preparation to place a dental crown.
